Don’t Stand So Close to Me – Reactions to Covid-19

As the Covid-19 situation has evolved and restrictions are being reduced, particularly the relaxing of the 2-metre-rule to 1-metre-plus, I thought it would be really interesting to see the variation in people’s attitudes to social distancing, what they think is safe and what they feel comfortable, so I started measuring and capturing this in a visual way.

So I headed out on the streets over the last couple of weeks near my studio in Stratford and in De Beauvoir, East London with a 3m tailors measuring tape and asked people for a portrait taken from the distance they would feel comfortable standing from me. The results, as you can see, varied!

Note: Between each set of portraits, the measuring tape was sanitised. Everyone was given the opportunity to sign a standard release form, but all gave verbal consent for publishing the images instead.
